Six of the seven tasks are inspections. One of them, cleaning, is physical work that repeats several times a year, and it is the only task most owners carry out themselves. What changes as the system gets larger

System size changes the cleaning task far more than it changes the inspection tasks. A 16-panel rooftop system and a 400-panel commercial roof need the same annual electrical inspection. They need completely different cleaning equipment.

  • 1 to 20 panels. One telescopic pole and one brush head. Cleaning takes under an hour and repeats two to four times a year.
  • 20 to 100 panels. A single rotating brush on a water-fed pole, with filtered water. Cleaning becomes a half-day task, which is the point at which most owners start pricing a contractor against solar panel cleaning cost.

Which tasks a homeowner completes without a contractor

Cleaning, shade clearing, output reading and yield logging need no electrical qualification and no roof access when the equipment reaches from the ground. Bolt torque, cable inspection and earthing tests sit on the DC side of the system and belong to the installer who signed the installation off.
