Throughput is the number that sets your price
Price per panel cannot be copied from a competitor, because it encodes their throughput and their travel. Measure your own on the first three jobs: panels cleaned, divided by hours on site including setup and pack-up.
A worked example. An operator reaching 25 panels an hour who needs R450 an hour to cover labour, vehicle, water and equipment amortisation has a floor of R18 a panel. Adding the travel to a job 20 km away as a call-out charge rather than folding it into the per-panel rate keeps that floor honest on small arrays. Why the call-out charge is not optional
A 6-panel residential array takes as long to reach as a 60-panel one. An operator pricing purely per panel loses money on every small job and cannot see it in the monthly figures, because the profitable large jobs hide the loss. Separating travel from cleaning makes each job’s margin visible.
Where the work is
- Residential rooftop. High volume, low value per job, dominated by travel. Route density decides profitability.
- Commercial rooftop. Warehouses, retail centres and schools. Repeat contracts, larger arrays, and the tier at which a rotating brush stops being optional.

What new operators get wrong
